Verda Health
A 4.9★ care companion that patients actually open every day.
The challenge
Where the numbers stood.
Verda's first app had a 2.8★ rating and a 9% week-four retention rate — patients downloaded it at the clinic and never returned. Medication adherence, the metric its clinic partners pay for, was unmeasurable because nobody logged anything.
The approach
Three moves, in order.
Shadow real patients
Twelve in-home sessions with patients aged 54–81 reshaped the brief: larger type, one action per screen, and reminders written in plain language a nurse would use.
Design for the worst day
Offline-first records, a three-tap refill flow, and caregiver sharing meant the app still worked in a hospital basement with no signal — where it matters most.
Rebuild native, ship weekly
One React Native codebase replaced two aging native apps. Weekly releases with staged rollouts let us fix rating-killers within days, not quarters.
The outcome
What changed.
In their words
“The research sessions changed how our clinicians think, not just how the app looks. Adherence is now a number we put in front of health-system buyers.”
